We’re back with more writing goodness for the holiday season! Remember: No pressure! These are just short exercises to keep the authorial muscles limber in the cold, busy run-up to Christmas.

Perspective Flip

This one is fun: Go to something you’ve already written. Doesn’t matter if it’s good, bad, or just meh. Find a short scene that you’ve already written and then write it from the point of view of someone else in the scene!

This exercise gets you to think about your story in different ways, and to consider the perspective of other characters. Even though you’ll probably never use this bit of writing, it may give you greater insight into another character, and could even spin out ideas for other scenes. More importantly, it teaches you how to differentiate voice, vocabulary, and mood based on character, a lesson you can take into everything you write.
