I have always said: If you get some sort of personal commentary on your form letter rejection, it’s a good thing. So, yeah, I was excited when — after the three rejections chronicled in the previous two weeks of TWiR!, I received this from the Missouri Review:
“A very touching piece!” Are you kidding me? That’s rejection letter gold, people!
I was over the moon. I figured that now I had an understanding of what they were looking for. I had touched them. They thought enough of my work to comment on it and to encourage me.
Did I “try again,” as they asked? Duh.
