I just tweeted this a few minutes ago, but I figured I should blog it, too, for those who don’t follow me on Twitter.
Rob Sheridan has posted a brief speech written by William Safire in 1969, to be read by President Nixon in the event of a catastrophic moon landing that left Armstrong and Aldrin stranded on the moon.
Reading it is spooky and evocative. It feels like a stolen glimpse into an alternate universe.
The tumblr cuts off that last few lines of the speech: “…are epic men of flesh and blood.
Others will follow, and surely find their way home. Man’s search will not be denied. But these men were the first, and they will remain the foremost in our hearts.
For every human being who looks up at the moon in the nights to come will know that there is some corner of another world that is forever mankind.”
Which borrows from a Rupert Brooke poem (http://www.bartleby.com/103/149.html) which makes the whole thing a million times cooler, if that’s even possible.
Nice! Thanks!
