So, a lot of you have been asking, and now I can tell you: The I Hunt Killers TV show is not going to happen. At least, not in its current form.
The folks at WBTV gave it their best shot. They optioned the series before the first book was even published and they’ve spent three years working very hard to bring it to the small screen. But they’ve officially let the option lapse at this point.
I know this makes some of you sad. And I know that some of you are happy because you didn’t like some of the changes WB was going to make in order to bring the series to TV.
Me? I’m neither happy nor sad. Look, it was always a longshot. Something that people not involved (even tangentially, as I am) in the entertainment business don’t understand is that it’s a miracle anything gets made at all. There is a constant tension between what the studio 1 wants and what the network 2 wants. It can be difficult to align everyone’s interests and desires in such a way that what comes out is any good at all…and oftentimes, everyone just decides that it’s best not to proceed.
Which is what has happened here. And I’m fine with it. I also would have been fine with the show proceeding and ending up on the air. 3 Would the show have been perfect? Would it have been exactly what I would have done, had I been in charge? Nah, of course not. But it would have exposed a vaster audience to my work, and that would have been nice.
So, the show is dead, but the books can never die. And who knows? Maybe someone else will come along and want to make a TV show or a movie out of these books. And maybe this time, the stars will align and it’ll actually make it all the way to your eyeballs.
Stranger things have happened, after all.
I really enjoy your “I Hunt Killers” series, man. It’s good. I really hope it can get made into a tv series/movie at some point, I’d been considering starting to try and adapt my favorite books into manuscripts (for practice, not business- unless you’re interested… 😉 ) But, I just saw this contact box and figured I’d add to your pile of fan mail- which I’m sure is both an ego boost and a source of annoyance at time. Later.
Can I just say that I love this series?! I buy all your books from audible.com and the guy who reads them is perfect. My only request is that you have the prequels done in audio format. Thanks for being original!
Charlie did a great job, didn’t he? Sadly, there’s not enough demand for the prequels in audio to justify the expense and resources it would take to make it happen. I’m glad you like the series! 🙂
Also are there ANY print copies of the prequels? I have searched everywhere. I would love to own the complete series. It’s my crazy conspiracy theory that actual print on real paper books are being phased out and I try to buy up all my favorites. Please, tell me where to get them; and if it doesn’t exist, please make it happen.
The mass market paperback edition of I HUNT KILLERS has LUCKY DAY printed in the back, but that’s the only way to get any of the prequels in print. The business dynamics of short fiction aren’t favorable — it’s not easy or profitable for a publisher to publish short pieces, most of the time. I can’t just snap my fingers and make it economically feasible for them to publish those stories in print, unfortunately.
If there’s noticeable demand and if the trilogy itself does well enough, there might be an impetus to publish the stories in a collection of some sort, but that’s a big if right now!
I can see this is from 2 years ago almost 3 has there been any news on the tv serious i love you books i started reading i hunt killers last year for one of my 8th grade book projects i love all of your books the serious is final but do jazz and connie end up together in any way
