How you got through that post without mentioning Lynda Carter is something of a miracle. You are to be commended Mr. Lyga.

This post is intriguing. So intriguing that I’m going to argue with you even though 80% of my knowledge of Wonder Woman comes straight from you.
For the bold, Wonder Woman is full of opportunity, not constraints. J.J. Abrams wasn’t even a fan when he chose which threads of Star Trek to run with, and the fans were open to it. Imagine if Guillermo del Toro announced that he wanted to reboot Wonder Woman. Her zigzagged past makes for the mother of all Rorschachs.
The costume is definitely a challenge, but…Xena. Maybe add a few criss-crossed straps up top as a visual reference to Wonder Woman’s S&M past. (Then it’s like she’s tied up all the time. And yet more free!)
1960’s is definitely the perfect time period.

@CuriousSue: I agree that Wonder Woman is full of opportunities! And if Hollywood executives had your open mind, then, yeah. I’d agree with you. But they generally don’t. The Star Trek reboot was done mostly because the franchise was all but dead and the original actors were too old to play their original characters any more.
Like I said in the piece: I’m sure there are solutions to most of these problems. I’m just not sure most of the solutions would also pass Hollywood muster (i.e. “appeal to the broadest audience and don’t piss anyone off”).

I agree that the costume is the key. I think if someone was to design a kind of skin tight body armor, armed to the teeth, part Ripley part Lara Croft part Xena thing for her we might have a ballgame. But the costume needs a complete reboot. Maybe something like this:http://browse.deviantart.com/?q=sci%20fi%20warrior%20girl&order =9&offset=24#/d2eu57aBut more patriotic?

Well, here’s the other problem with the costume, and I should have mentioned this in the main post: Wonder Woman’s main schtick (or one of them, at least) is “bullets ‘n’ bracelets,” wherein she uses her amazing speed and dexterity to deflect bullets with her cool bracelets. As soon as you stick her in body armor of any kind, you start to wonder, “What’s the point of the bracelets then?” and you lose one of the fundamental — and fun! — aspects of the character. She almost NEEDS to be dressed as vulnerably as possible. Weird.

Wonder Woman Pilot

Did you know they actually did make a Wonder Woman pilot for NBC? It was unaired, but it leaked, and there’s good reason. It’s a good example of what you’re talking about and why translating Wonder Woman to today’s media won’t work. I’m sure you can find it on YouTube. But for a shorter look, this video has a great commentary on the highlights (and lowlights): http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/teamt/nash/specials/33934- wonder-woman-2011

WTF?

@Eric, yeah that looks bloody awful. Personally I don’t think WW can be brought to the screen again without being either unbearably cheesy (exhibit A.) or completely re-imagined. Linda Hamilton – Terminator 2 anyone?
Had dinner with a costume instructor tonight, am thought of asking her to set an assignment to redesign wonder woman’s costume for the 21st Century.
