A Question for Writers

OK, a strictly hypothetical question here, sparked by a discussion between my brother and me during the Super Bowl last night:

Writers -- if you could spend $100,000.00 and have your book be among fifteen to be promoted in a 30-second spot during the Super Bowl, would you do it?

Why or why not?

Super Bowl Ad

Hi Barry --

Absolutely not. It's too much money, not the right demographic for me, couldn't compete with the other funnier ads, etc.

Would you?

Laura

P.S. Hope you're well.

Hi, Laura!

You know, I can't decide. I think it would depend on which other books were in the ad and the design/production of the ad itself. Done properly, I think it could work. But that's a hell of a big caveat -- it's tough to make ads for books.

I answered this on your Fanboy site, too, and the answer is still no. Laura is right--not my demographic, can't compete with the screaming animal ad (my favorite by far), and somehow this just isn't how I want to get it done, you know?

Super Bowl Ad

I don't think I would because I don't watch the Super Bowl, and that's a ridiculous amount of money to spend on a 30-second ad. Personally, I like commercials for books and I wouldn't mind seeing a Fb&GG or a Boy Toy one. Maybe it would be better to go after an ad that was just running during regular programming

Competing Ads

I mean, if you were a guy (theoretically) and you saw an ad for Veil of Roses right before an ad featuring those shamefully beautiful Victoria's Secret chicks, would you buy your girl my book or something from Victoria's Secret?

@Laura: I think that's a false distinction. Advertising is about making impressions, not about spurring an immediate sale. That would be an impression made instantly on MILLIONS of people. If one percent of them remember the book the next time they see it in a book store, that's a lot of impressions, relatively speaking.

But I'm not trying to defend the ad. I'm just wondering about the pros and cons of it.
