Writing Advice #24: The Path to Publication (Part 6)

If you’ve learned anything thus far in my description of the Path to Publication (and, God — I hope you’ve learned SOMETHING, otherwise I’ll feel like the world’s worst teacher…), I hope it’s this: Despite the tendency of people to invest the Path with pseudomystical properties, getting published is, in and of itself, a very simple series of very simple steps. Kyra Speaks: Macleanspace!

Sarah MacLean (author of THE SEASON and the upcoming NINE RULES TO BREAK WHEN ROMANCING A RAKE) has a very cool, fun feature on her website called INSIDE THE CHARACTERS’ STUDIO, in which she has authors answer the classic Proust questionnaire…in the voice of their characters!

She got in touch with me a week or so ago and asked if Kyra could participate. That seemed like a lot of fun, so I was happy to be a part of it. Sure enough, it was a blast.

Click on over to Sarah’s site to see Kyra’s answers, including the revelation of her favorite curse word and what she thinks will happen if she gets to Heaven.

Minimates: Share the Love

So, I recently held a cool sort of drawing/contest to give away some Goth Girl minimates. It was pretty simple: BuyGoth Girl Rising, e-mail in your receipt, and you could get a minimate.

That promotion is over, but people are still wondering how they can get their hands on a minimate. Well, I’m here to tell you.

I wanted to use Kyra’s cool toy to do more than just promote my own book. I wanted to also introduce people to some other fantastic writers. So, I came up with “Share the Love.” It’s simple:

  1. Buy a copy of any of my books. You can do this from Amazon.comBN.com, or your local independent bookseller.
  2. At the same time, buy any book from any of the following authors: Natalie StandifordPaul Griffin,Melissa C. Walker, or Dan Poblocki. Again, you can do this from Amazon.comBN.com, or yourlocal independent bookseller.
  3. E-mail a PDF or a JPG file of the order form or the receipt from steps 1 & 2 to this special e-mail address: minimate@barrylyga.com. Be sure to include your full mailing address! This e-mail address is ONLY for this promotion! No one will be answering questions sent there, so if you have questions, ask them in the comments below or use the contact form.
  4. This will run from now until I get 100 entries, so send ’em in!

If you don’t know how to to make a PDF or a JPG from something on your screen…

If you buy the books at a brick-and-mortar store and you don’t own a scanner, you can have your receipt scanned at places like Kinko’s and similar office supply/services stores.

You CANNOT just forward or e-mail a text confirmation or e-mail confirmation from an online store! It needs to be a file showing the web site’s confirmation screen or a scan of a paper receipt from a store!

(Sorry, but this offer is for U.S. readers only.)

(And yes: You can still be in the running to get a Goth Girl minimate by sharing the Goth Girl Rising widget , which you’ll find a little further down on the page. Just click on the “Share” button and put that widget on your MySpace or Facebook or web site or blog. Then, send an e-mail to widget@barrylyga.com containing the link to your page with the widget AND your full mailing address. Every week for the month of October, I will choosefifteen winners at random and send them minimates. You can post the widget AND submit a receipt to get a minimate. If you end up with two, hey — good for you)

Minimates Gaffe!

Hey, gang! There’s been a SLIGHT snafu with sending out the first batch of minimates for contest winners. I am REALLY sorry. They’ll go out this week — I promise! — along with the winners from this past week’s widget-posters.

We’re a little new to sending out all of this stuff here at Stately Lyga Manor. Thanks for your patience. 🙂

In the meantime, just a reminder: If you want your own Kyra, just post the Goth Girl Rising widget (below) on your blog, web site, MySpace page, or Facebook page. Send the link to the page with the widget towidget@barrylyga.com. Ta-da! You will be entered into a drawing. Each week in October, I’ll give away fifteen Goth Girl Minimates.

Oops! Sorry, Wolverine!

It has been pointed out to me that I erred in this previous post when I called Hero-Type the “runt of the litter” for having the fewest Amazon reviews of all my books. Wolverine: Worst Day Ever is actually (somewhat appropriately, given Logan’s short stature) the runt of the litter.

Sorry, Wolvie. Please put the claws away. Thanks.
